Assignment 1

The initial motive for the work was inspired by spiral shaped forms found in architecture, like in Russian modernist architecture (Shukov) and constructivism as evident in Chernikov's sketches.  More recent examples like London City Hall by Norman Foster and the Helix Hotel, by Leeser Architects also incorporate spiral, helix shapes in their designs.
With this in mind I decided to create an abstract spiral form.  I started with a sculpture made from paper to enable me to get the work into Meshlab and to reconstruct a 3d model of the work.  The modification of the shape during 3d reconstruction added an interesting element to the work and highlighted some of the limitations of this reconstruction method, in terms of capturing this shape and material. The resulting exaggeration does add a unique quality to the sculpture while the work still retains the original idea of interconnected spirals. I could call it Chernikov's Apocalypse.
